As I typed the title to this I realized it is Friday the 13th. Are you superstitious???
Bursting into song.. (in an opera-like mood)
“Oh Christmas tree, Oh Christmas tree, how lovely are your branches!”
One of my favorite aspects of Christmas is my Christmas tree. Yes we have a fake tree. I think in my entire life we have had 1 real tree, but don’t quote me there. In recent years I really wanted to get a real tree. You know, take the kids through the experience of cutting one down and what not. Unfortunately though, knowing my pets it just wouldn’t last. Plus, the more I think about it the more I realize how much happier I am with my fake one.
For starters, did you know that the water that is used to keep the tree alive is poisonous to animals? As well as pine needles are poisonous to cats? Knowing my animals, there is no way I could keep them out of it. They are ornery like that.
Secondly, the mess. I love the smell of a fresh pine tree, but with having animals and little kids around, having pine needles everywhere is not ideal.
Not only that, but, as a mother nature lover, cutting down trees and throwing them away makes me cringe! I imagine how much screaming the tree is doing during the chopping process and what for? For 30 days (or less) of beautifully lit and decorative branches all to be taken to the landfill later on? I would much rather spare the trees and stick with my fake one. Add in some fresh pine smells (they make ones that hang in the tree nowadays) and it smells just as good!
And finally, the upkeep of the tree. Sure it is easy to keep it watered, but you never really know if it’s getting enough water and when it is too dry, it becomes a fire hazard. Despite anyone’s expertise in trees, it can and does happen.
What kind of tree do you have?
