Never Forget

September 11, 2001

It was an ordinary morning for me. Wake up, get dressed, and go to school here in Nebraska. I was in the beginning of my 6th grade year. I remember it very vividly.

I walked into my classroom, for social studies, first thing that morning. Everyone was rambunctious as usual. I specifically remember people bombarding me for my gum. All of a sudden our teacher Mrs. J came in silently rolling a T.V. cart in with her. Usually this was an exciting thing because we would get to watch the movie instead of doing work, but to all of our surprise that wasn’t the case.

She turned the t.v. on and it was on the news channel. I remember they kept mentioning towers, not knowing whatsoever what they were referring to. I remember the students were all silent. Everyone in complete disbelief of what we were seeing when all of a sudden the second tower was hit and the buildings started to crumble to the ground.

I was pretty clueless then. I had never heard of the twin towers or what it meant to be a terrorist. I kept hearing these terms wondering what the heck was going on. We finished that class and then we were all sent home for the day. There was a very eerie feeling all over.

I will never forget that day. All the people who lost their lives that day. People who lost their loved ones that day. People who tried to save as many people as they could that day. I cannot fathom what sort of pain and imagery they have to live with having seen and lost so much precious and valuable life. What should have been an ordinary day for everyone became a day of tragedy.

I just don’t think I will ever understand why these sort of things happen. Why?

  1. I was a new court clerk, 9 months on the job, beginning to see the darker side of people. At that time I was still surprised at what people were capable of doing to themselves and others.
Word came to my office about the first tower and I went to the Code Enforcement Office with the other employees and watched the plane hit the second tower and all that happened that day.

I still don’t understand why we, as human beings, are unable to learn from the past. Maybe some just don’t want to.

    1. Everyone is too self absorbed. They think their way of thinking is the only way to think. But then again even saying that makes me the same I suppose..
It is just sad how little life is valued anymore.
